You’re getting Happy Bubbles?! Can we come over??
You never know how many friends you have until you get a hot tub.
And actually, you probably do need us to come over…
Hot Tub Power Requirements
Some smaller hot tubs can run on a regular 15-amp outlet, but that’s typically only 2- or 3-person hot tubs.
Anything bigger than that and you will probably need a larger 30-50 amp, 240-volt power circuit.
Unless you happen to be installing your hot tub where you dryer used to be (was your dryer outside??), it means adding a new circuit.
In some cases, you might even need to upgrade your electrical panel if you don’t have enough total power.
Do you know how much total power your home has? We think you should. That’s why we add a Happy Panel Power Label at every single home we visit.
Hot Tub Power FAQ’s
Yes, in almost all cases, you’ll need to add a dedicated circuit just for the hot tub. Hot tubs draw a lot of continuous power, especially the 240V models. Sharing a circuit with other appliances could cause breakers to trip or create a safety hazard.
A dedicated circuit ensures your hot tub has the right amount of power and helps protect your electrical system from overload. It’s also required by code and often includes a GFCI disconnect placed within sight of the tub for added safety.
Not sure what your setup needs? Our Electrical Safety Advisors can walk you through it during your SaFE System Evaluation, making sure your hot tub is powered safely, correctly, and ready for relaxation.
The amount of power a hot tub needs depends on the type and size, but most full-size hot tubs require a dedicated 240V circuit and draw between 30 and 60 amps. These models heat faster and can run the heater and jets at the same time, which makes for a much better soak.
Smaller or plug-and-play hot tubs may only need a standard 120V outlet, drawing about 10 to 15 amps, but they heat more slowly and can’t usually run everything at once.
To know for sure what your hot tub needs—and whether your panel can handle it—our Electrical Safety Advisors can help during your SaFE System Evaluation. We’ll make sure everything is set up safely and ready for a relaxing, worry-free soak.
